(Writing) There is controversy (debate) surrounding the idea of the “death penalty.” Do you believe that the death penalty is justified? Create a one paragraph argument. Use examples to support your claim.

(Reading) Create 5 sentences using the vocabulary word of the day “vigorously.” Read pages 42-54. Answer the following questions:

1. How is little man’s anger a result of his environment?

(Writing) How do we know that Little Man is oblivious (unaware) of his environment? Use examples from the text. Write your answer in one paragraph.

(Writing) Mr. Turner tells Ms. Logan that he has no choice but to shop at the Wallace’s store because he does not have cash. As a result of not having cash, he is has to use credit in the store. Was there ever a situation where you had felt you had no choice? Write your answer in one paragraph.

1. What does Stacey mean by, “there’s things you don’t understand, Cassy” (104). In other words, what doesn’t Cassy understand?

Research Project Assignment

• Today in class you were assigned a topic for your research paper.  This research paper will be graded as an exam. It is very important that you do this research project because it will give you a better understanding of Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.
• Your report must be written in 2 complete pages on loose leaf paper.
• Please be sure to include a cover page. I have attached a two page to template to help you organize your ideas.
• DO NOT plagiarize- If someone plagiarizes another person’s idea or work, they use it or copy it and pretend that they thought of it or created it.
• You must cite your references in your bibliography. I have attached a sample works cited page for your convenience. Please refer to page 41 in your student planner to help you with your bibliography.
• This research project is due next week Tuesday 11/27/12.

(Reading) Answer the following questions in complete answers.  Read pages 6-10 of Sonny’s Blues.

1. What could be a possible reason as to why Sonny never got along with his father? (Think about the incident of Sonny’s uncle’s death)

2. Why was the narrator against Sonny’s dreams of being a drummer/musician? What does this tell us about the environment they live in?

3. The narrator’s mother tells him, “I ain’t telling you this, she said, “to make you scared or bitter or to make you hate nobody. I’m telling you this because you got a brother. And the world ain’t changed.” Barack Obama was re-elected for presidency. He won but does that mean that racism doesn’t exist? why or why not?

(Reading) Read pages 2-5 in Sonnys Blues . Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

• The narrator, Sonny’s brother, mentioned that the boys who reside (live) in Harlem are filled with rage. Where is this rage coming from? In other words, what is this rage about?
•  The narrator refers to the students as being cursed? What does he mean by that? How are they cursed?
•  Why is the boy whistling a tune? What is symbolic of this? How can this scene be compared to a scene in Catcher in the Rye?
•  What roles does music play within the first few pages?
• Why does the narrator feel like crying when Sonny’s friend asks him for money?
• What could be a possible reason as to why Sonny and his friend use drugs?

HW #15- This homework is due 10/18/12. No homework is due on 10/17/12 (PSATS)

Quiz 3 will be pushed forward to Friday. You are expected to bring in a dictionary tomorrow for editing. You will receive 5 points on your next quiz once you show me your dictionary. A quick review will be given on Thursday.

(Reading)- Read in your independent books for 30 minutes. What connections in your book can you make with the character Holden or any other character in Catcher in the Rye?

(Writing)  In chapter 16, Holden talks about how he went back to the museum of Natural History, and he was the only thing different. Write about a place that hasn’t changed, but seems different because you have changed. For example, When I was younger, I’d go to the library and look for children books to read. When I was in college, I had to move onto higher level books in the library.
