Poetry Contest!  ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS!

Your E.L.A. teachers are hosting a poetry writing competition.  In preparation for the poetry unit we are beginning very soon, we want to see the poetic skills we are confident you all have.

Due this coming Friday, (MAY 24) you are required to write a creative poem that is 20+ lines.  We are leaving the topic and style totally up to you!

While all of you are required to submit a poem, ten students are going to be chosen as “winners” from the 8th grade to receive a very special prize based on the quality of the poems you submit.

Your poems will be assessed based on quality of presentation, individual voice/originality, concept, grammar/style, and ideas.  If you have any questions, please ask your E.L.A. teachers!

*If you are having trouble finding a topic to write about, the following are some potential ideas:

Personal challenges (the challenge itself, how you can overcome this challenge)

Reflections on: school, music, our world/society, your environment, family, friends, favorite things, favorite     people, things/ideas/people you admire, etc.
